Should we worry about overdiagnosis? How big is the problem?
Is an active researcher in breast cancer, and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer within the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology in Queen’s University Belfast. His interests are in: the pre-surgical treatment of breast cancer, to try and reduce the amount of surgery necessary for women with a diagnosis of breast câncer; the use of drugs to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer in women with a high genetic risk; decision making and the provision of information for women making decisions about breast reconstruction following a mastectomy for breast câncer; the outcomes of breast reconstruction surgery, and the use of novel technology such as three dimensional photography to assess the outcomes of surgery. He has published research papers in medical journals on these topics, and in 2014 was granted the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the University of Ulster for research in the field of surgical techniques in breast cancer. As Deputy Clinical Director of the Northern Ireland Cancer Trials Network, Mr McIntosh supports many research studies running across the United Kingdom and globally. He is a member of the National Cancer Research Institute Breast Clinical Studies Group, which is the body responsible for developing and promoting clinical trials in breast cancer to ensure that patients have access to the best possible standard of evidence-based treatment.
